Most Felton residents treat August as one long stretch of warm afternoons and slow evenings. It isn't. This month has a shape, and once you see it, the calendar makes a lot more sense.
Three pivots do the work. A construction deadline early in the month clears Highway 9. Tuesdays lock in around a farmers' market that has been on the same block since 1987. And one weekend in the middle turns Roaring Camp into the loudest three days of the summer. Plan around those, and August stops feeling like a blur.
Pivot One: August 6 Is When Highway 9 Gets Its Shoulders Back
If your commute has felt slower since spring, that's because it has been. Now through August 6, construction crews will work on the final phase of the Graham Hill Road repaving project. Final paving work on a 3.6-mile stretch of Graham Hill Road was scheduled through the Santa Cruz Water Department, and once the barricades come down, the north-south flow through town resets.
That matters more than it sounds. Graham Hill is how a large share of Felton residents actually leave town toward Scotts Valley and 17, and the delays have pushed traffic onto Highway 9 through the middle of downtown. After Aug 6, the pressure on the Highway 9 corridor eases right as market Tuesdays hit their peak volume. If you have been avoiding the 4 to 6 p.m. window near Russell Avenue, that window is about to breathe again.
Pivot Two: Tuesdays Belong to 120 Russell Avenue
The Felton Farmers' Market is not a nice-to-have. It is the weekly meeting point for the San Lorenzo Valley, and August is when it hits full stride. The Felton Farmers' Market is a treasured weekly gathering May through October, now running for over 30 years. The Felton Farmers' Market started in 1987 and is the second oldest market in Santa Cruz County.

- Heat rule. SCCFM will cancel the Felton Farmers Market when temperatures are expected to reach or exceed 95 degrees or when the National Weather Service issues either a Heat Advisory or Excessive Heat Warning. The high heat policy applies to the Felton Market only. Check before you drive over on the hottest afternoons.
- EBT stretch. Both markets also participate in the Market Match program, which provides CalFresh/EBT participants a dollar-for-dollar match up to $15 for fresh fruits and vegetables.
The market is also the closest thing Felton has to a downtown living room. Local bands play the Felton Market weekly. The year-round music series runs at all but the Downtown market. If you are new to the block, this is the fastest way to meet neighbors without introducing yourself.
Pivot Three: The Middle Weekend Is Roaring Camp's Peak Load
Roaring Camp runs steam trains all summer, but the weekend of Aug 14 to 16 is the one to actually plan around. Two of the biggest programmed days of the season stack against a trail race, and it changes the character of the whole south end of town.

The 10K is on the Felton Business Association calendar for the year: Race Thru The Redwoods Sunday, August 16th, 2026, a 10k trail run and Kids 1 mile at Roaring Camp Railroads. On Aug 14 to 15, Roaring Camp programs blacksmithing demonstrations alongside gold panning, kids crafts, and live music. The address is 5401 Graham Hill Road, which means the traffic pattern that just cleared up on Aug 6 gets its second stress test right here.
A note for residents who have been on this block a while: this is also the corridor Roaring Camp's Roaring Camp & Big Trees Railroad uses, departing daily from its Felton depot and climbing 3.25 mi of steep grades through towering redwood forest to the summit of Bear Mountain. Steam‑powered trains, featuring several locomotives dating from the 1890s, provide regular passenger service and are among the oldest such narrow‑gauge engines operating in the United States. If you have out-of-town family staying with you that weekend, book train tickets before you arrive at the depot. The Beach Train to the Boardwalk sells out on race weekends.
If you would rather skip the crowd entirely, the Aug 8 and Aug 22 weekends are the quiet ones. Same trails, half the parking pressure.
Felton Music Hall, in One Glance
The other reason August feels dense is 6275 Highway 9. Felton Music Hall's August lineup runs almost every weekend, and the mix skews toward acts that draw from Santa Cruz, San Jose, and the Peninsula rather than just Felton itself. That is worth knowing if you live within walking distance, because parking gets tight.

The Duane Betts run is the outlier worth flagging. Wednesday August 26 and Thursday August 27, tickets can be purchased for individual dates, along with a limited quantity of 2-day passes so that you can catch both nights. This is a standing room general admissions show. There will be a limited number of chairs located in the back of the concert hall. Seating will be first come first served. Bar and food open at 5 p.m. on show nights, which pairs neatly with the market wrapping up two blocks north at 5:30 on Tuesdays.
What to Actually Do With All This
The pattern hiding inside the August calendar is this: the first week is a construction week, the second week is a music week, the third week is a Roaring Camp week, and the fourth week belongs to the market and one final concert stretch.
